What’s the best way to spend $800 upgrading my 1440p gaming PC?

I have around $800 available to upgrade my current gaming PC and want to get the biggest performance improvement possible. My system has a Ryzen 7 3700X, ASUS TUF Gaming X570-Plus motherboard, 32GB of DDR4-3200 memory, an RTX 3060 with 12GB of VRAM, and a 1TB Crucial NVMe SSD for Windows. I also have two very old Western Digital hard drives for extra storage. I'm still using Windows 10 and play on two 27-inch 2560×1440 monitors. Since gaming is my main use, should I prioritize a new graphics card, a CPU upgrade, storage, or something else?

Don’t replace the RAM just because monitoring software shows around 1600MHz. DDR memory reports its real clock speed, so 1596MHz corresponds to roughly DDR4-3200 after the effective double data rate is accounted for. Your 32GB kit is already fine unless it isn’t running in dual-channel mode or has stability problems.

A faster AM4 gaming CPU like the Ryzen 7 5700X3D or 5500X3D could be a great upgrade, especially in CPU-heavy or esports games. However, with two 1440p monitors and an RTX 3060, a graphics card upgrade will generally provide the more noticeable improvement in most modern games. Consider the X3D CPU later if you find yourself CPU-limited or if you can combine it with a less expensive GPU.

Storage is worth addressing if those old hard drives are noisy, failing, or slowing down game loads, but it won’t increase gaming frame rates. Add a reasonably priced 1TB or 2TB NVMe SSD for games and keep the current boot drive if it has enough free space. I’d treat that as a secondary upgrade after the GPU.

At 1440p, the graphics card is usually going to limit gaming performance before the Ryzen 7 3700X does, so I’d put most of the budget toward a GPU upgrade. A current midrange card such as an RX 9070 would be a major improvement over the RTX 3060, although the exact model and sale prices may push the total slightly over $800. Your existing 32GB of DDR4-3200 is perfectly adequate.

The system is primarily used for gaming, and the memory is DDR4-3200. I was mainly wondering whether the CPU or GPU would make the bigger difference at 1440p.
