What’s the easiest way to move everything from my old laptop to a new one?

I just bought a newer, more powerful laptop and want to transfer my files and folders from the old one without losing anything or damaging the original data. What's the safest and simplest method? I'd also like to know whether this can transfer installed programs and games, or if those need to be set up separately.

Cloud syncing makes the files available on both laptops and gives you an off-site backup, which helps protect against theft, fire, or hardware failure. However, it usually won’t recreate your entire setup. You’ll generally need to reinstall applications and games, then restore or reconfigure their settings. For sensitive tax or financial files, consider keeping an additional encrypted backup that you control rather than relying only on a cloud provider.

That makes sense. I’ll use cloud storage for convenience, but I’ll also keep another backup for important files.

A direct transfer between the two laptops is possible through a network share or a proper transfer cable, but a cable isn’t necessary. For most people, an external SSD is simpler and faster: copy the files from the old laptop, verify the copy, and then move them to the new one. Installed programs, drivers, and many games usually cannot just be copied over; reinstall them on the new system and use cloud saves or exported settings where available.

A direct cable can work, but it’s mainly a convenience. It doesn’t automatically make installed software portable, so you’d still need to reinstall much of it.

For ordinary files, copy your Documents, Pictures, Desktop, Downloads, and any other data folders to a reliable external SSD, then copy them onto the new laptop. Keep the old laptop untouched until you’ve checked that everything transferred correctly. Cloud storage such as OneDrive or Google Drive can also work, but uploading and downloading a large amount of data may take a while.

Cloud storage sounds useful, but I’m still wondering about the actual transfer process and whether it can move everything.
