I'm upgrading a PC used exclusively for Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve, not gaming. The system has an Intel Core i5-12400, an MSI B760M Pro-M/P DDR4 motherboard, 32GB of DDR4 memory, and an XPG Pylon 650W power supply. I prefer NVIDIA and budget is not a major concern. What GPU would be a sensible maximum for this platform, when would the i5-12400 become a significant bottleneck, and would I need a stronger PSU for the recommended card?

For a practical upper limit, I’d look at an RTX 5070 or possibly an RTX 5070 Ti. Beyond that, the i5-12400 is more likely to hold back performance in mixed editing workloads, especially with high-resolution effects, multicam projects, and CPU-heavy codecs. A 5070 Ti would generally justify upgrading to a quality 750W-or-higher PSU rather than keeping the 650W unit.
An RTX 4070-class card is a reasonable match for this system and should work well for GPU-accelerated effects, exports, and Resolve workloads. The i5-12400 may limit performance in heavily CPU-based timelines or encoding tasks, but it won’t make the GPU unusable. Your 650W supply may be adequate for a 4070 if it has the proper connectors and is in good condition.
If you truly want the best performance rather than simply the biggest GPU, upgrade the platform first. A newer CPU with more cores, along with additional RAM if your projects are demanding, would let a high-end NVIDIA card such as an RTX 5080 stretch its legs. With the current motherboard and processor, an RTX 5070 is a more balanced choice; a 5070 Ti is about the highest I’d consider before spending money on the rest of the system.
