What’s the safest way to free up space on a nearly full Windows C: drive?

My Windows C: drive is 117 GB and has only about 1 GB remaining. I've already tried Storage Sense and Disk Cleanup, but they didn't recover much space. What are the safest ways to identify and remove unnecessary files without damaging Windows, deleting important system data, or affecting installed programs? I'd also appreciate recommendations for trustworthy tools.

Run Disk Cleanup as administrator and select the Windows update cleanup and temporary-file options it offers. You can also press Windows+R, enter %TEMP%, and remove files Windows allows you to delete; skip anything that says it’s currently in use. Avoid manually deleting items from the component store or the Windows Installer folder, because that can break updates or installed programs.

First, use a disk-usage viewer such as WinDirStat, TreeSize Free, or SpaceSniffer to see which folders are actually consuming the space. Don’t delete files just because they look large, especially inside C:Windows, C:Program Files, or C:WindowsInstaller. Use the viewer to identify the category, then clean it through the relevant Windows setting or application.

If the drive stays nearly full after cleanup, the long-term fix is probably storage expansion. A larger SSD can be added if the computer supports it, or the existing drive can be cloned to a bigger one. Keep some free space available for Windows updates and normal operation rather than trying to fill the drive completely.

Check Settings > Apps and uninstall programs you no longer use. Then review your own folders—Downloads, Desktop, Documents, Pictures, and Videos—and move large personal files to another drive or backup before deleting them. Empty the Recycle Bin afterward, since deleted files still occupy space until it’s cleared.
