I'm replacing an old Core i3 and want to build the fastest gaming-focused system possible using Intel hardware. Budget isn't a concern, so I'm deciding between the current Core Ultra lineup, the older Core i9 options, or possibly waiting for a future architecture. Which Intel CPU offers the best gaming performance, and what motherboard and memory should I pair with it?

If your only goal is the highest gaming performance, Intel isn’t currently the usual first choice. AMD’s X3D processors are generally faster for gaming, especially models with a single core complex and extra 3D cache. That said, if you specifically want Intel, the 270K Plus is the more practical option than the 14900K or 14900KS.
For an Intel-only build, the Core Ultra 7 270K Plus is generally the sensible high-end choice. It delivers performance close to the fastest older i9 chips while using less power and costing much less. The Core i9-14900KS can still win in certain games when fully tuned, but the difference usually isn’t worth the extra heat and power.
That sounds like the direction I’ll take. I’ve had several AMD systems fail after a year or two, so I’d rather stick with Intel for this long-term build.
The 14900KS is often described as Intel’s fastest gaming chip when it’s paired with a top motherboard, tuned memory, and excellent cooling. The newer Core Ultra 270K Plus is usually the better overall purchase because it comes close in many games, draws less power, and performs better in many productivity workloads. Future architectures may be worth waiting for, but there’s no reason to delay if you need a system now.
I understand AMD may be faster, but I’ve had poor long-term experiences with both AMD CPUs and GPUs. This time I’m prioritizing Intel reliability and personal preference.
