Which AM4 CPUs are safe choices for these budget MSI motherboards?

I'm considering a CPU upgrade for two MSI boards: the B450M-A PRO and B550M-A PRO. Both are compact, budget-oriented models with four-phase power delivery and no VRM heatsinks. For gaming, what is the fastest AM4 processor they can handle reliably without VRM overheating or performance throttling?

A lack of VRM heatsinks is mainly a concern during sustained all-core workloads, not typical gaming. A 5700X3D or 5800X3D should normally be usable, provided the case has decent airflow and the motherboard BIOS supports the processor. Check the CPU support list and update the BIOS before swapping chips.

They may draw close to their rated power in heavy rendering or stress tests, but gaming loads are usually around the 60–80 W range. That makes VRM throttling much less likely than it would be under long, fully threaded workloads.

The smaller M versions are more budget-focused and have weaker cooling around the VRM, but that does not automatically prevent them from running higher-end AM4 CPUs. For a gaming-only system, the 5700X3D is the sensible choice; the 5800X3D is faster but may not be worth the extra cost. Make sure the VRM area gets some airflow and avoid aggressive overclocking.

The Ryzen 7 5700X3D is probably the best gaming upgrade for the money, and the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is the fastest gaming chip available on AM4. Despite the 100 W-class rating, these CPUs usually draw much less power during gaming, so the boards should generally handle them.
