Which AM4 motherboard should I buy for gaming and video editing?

My ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero appears to be failing. USB devices intermittently disconnect and trigger soft reboots, and after updating the motherboard drivers, connected devices stopped working properly. The system sometimes shows motherboard warning lights, runs its fans at maximum speed, loses display output, and then temporarily returns to normal after another reboot.

I need a replacement motherboard that works with my Ryzen 7 3700X and supports gaming and video editing. My preferred features are Thunderbolt 4 if possible, several USB 3.1 or faster ports, Ethernet, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, and good overall connectivity. I initially considered the ASUS ProArt X570-Creator WiFi but have seen mixed opinions about it. I also thought HDMI 2.1 might be useful, although I now understand that my dedicated graphics card handles display output and that the 3700X has no integrated graphics. Thunderbolt would mainly be for fast transfers, though I am also comparing it with external SSDs such as the Samsung T7 and recognizing that a 12TB hard drive would remain the limiting factor.

The symptoms you describe could be a failing board, but I would not assume that immediately. USB power or driver problems, unstable memory, the power supply, and overheating can cause similar crashes and maximum-fan behavior. Before buying a replacement, test with only essential USB devices, clear or update the BIOS, check temperatures and memory stability, and try another power supply if available. If the failures continue across a minimal setup, replacing the motherboard becomes much more reasonable.

If Thunderbolt 4 is essential, the ASUS ProArt X570-Creator WiFi is basically the practical AM4 choice with built-in support. Thunderbolt 5 is not available on AM4, so that would require moving to a newer platform. The board should work with the Ryzen 7 3700X, although it may be expensive since X570 is now an older platform. Also, HDMI on the motherboard will not help because the 3700X has no integrated graphics; you would use the ports on your dedicated GPU instead.

I realized the motherboard HDMI output is unnecessary since I already use a dedicated GPU. I am mainly interested in Thunderbolt for transfer performance, although I am reconsidering whether it is worthwhile when the source is a large hard drive.

If you can give up built-in Thunderbolt, a good B550 board would probably be the better value. Options such as the MSI B550 Tomahawk MAX WiFi or ASUS TUF Gaming B550-Plus WiFi II provide solid power delivery, 2.5Gb Ethernet, wireless connectivity, plenty of fast USB ports, and full compatibility with your 3700X. Your current CPU and memory can be moved over directly. For large file transfers, remember that a 12TB mechanical hard drive will be much slower than the interface itself, so Thunderbolt will not make that drive transfer data like an external SSD.
