Which CPU should I choose for a gaming PC in 2026: i5-14600K/KF, Ryzen 5 7600X, or something else?

The 14600K/KF makes more sense if you already own DDR4, since Intel gives you the option to reuse it. It also has more cores and is generally stronger in productivity workloads, though that advantage matters much less for a gaming-only system. Keep in mind that LGA1700 is effectively a finished platform, so future CPU upgrades would probably require a new motherboard.

Before deciding, compare the total platform cost rather than just the CPU price. Include the motherboard, RAM, cooler, and possibly a BIOS update. If the total cost is genuinely similar and you’re starting from scratch, AM5 is the safer long-term choice. Intel is mainly attractive when you already have DDR4 or find a substantial bundle discount. You could also check current-generation alternatives such as the Core 5 250K Plus, Ryzen 5 9600X, or available 7600X3D/7500X3D models.

If you can increase the budget, look at a Ryzen X3D chip instead. A 7800X3D or a newer equivalent would be a more compelling gaming purchase than either of these, especially if you want the system to last several years. The extra cache can provide a meaningful improvement in some games.

If you’re buying DDR5 and don’t already have compatible memory, I’d lean toward the Ryzen 5 7600X on AM5. Its gaming performance is close enough that you’re unlikely to notice a difference, while the platform gives you a better upgrade path for a future X3D processor. Pair it with 32GB of DDR5-6000, ideally around CL30, and a B650 motherboard.
