I'm putting together a PC and want to save money by buying some components secondhand. Which parts are generally safe to buy used, and which ones are better purchased new? I'd also appreciate tips for checking used components before buying them.

I’d be cautious with motherboards and power supplies. Motherboards can have hidden faults that are difficult to find during a quick pickup, so a CPU-and-motherboard bundle or a seller with a return policy is safer. For power supplies, only consider a reputable model with a known age and enough capacity; avoid old or low-quality units since they can damage other components.

Most parts are fine used if you can inspect and test them. CPUs, RAM, graphics cards, cases, and air coolers are usually good candidates. Check CPUs and motherboards carefully for bent pins, test memory and graphics cards, and make sure cases and coolers are structurally intact. Used all-in-one liquid coolers are riskier because pumps can wear out or start making noise.

Storage deserves the most caution, especially for important files. Used SSDs can have a lot of wear and may fail with little warning, so ask for a health report such as a CrystalDiskInfo screenshot. Used hard drives may provide warning signs before failing, but backups are still essential. Drives used for games or media are less concerning because that data can usually be replaced, while important documents and photos should be stored on a reliable drive with separate backups.
