Which RTX 30-Series GPU Is the Best Budget Upgrade from an RTX 2070?

Before choosing, share your actual budget, country, monitor resolution, power supply, and the games or applications you use. Moving from an RTX 2070 to something like a 3070 may only provide a moderate performance increase while keeping the same 8GB VRAM. A 3080 or 3080 Ti makes more sense within the 30-series, while a newer RTX 4070-class card or an RX 6800 XT could be a better long-term purchase if your budget allows.

A used RX 6800 or RX 6800 XT is worth considering if you aren’t committed to Nvidia. The 16GB of VRAM gives them more breathing room in modern games, and their standard rasterized gaming performance is very strong for the price. The RX 6700 XT can also be a solid 1080p upgrade, but it needs to be priced well compared with a used RTX 3080.

I’d avoid the RTX 3060 as an upgrade because it can perform similarly to, or even slower than, the RTX 2070 in some games. The extra VRAM doesn’t automatically make it faster. The RTX 3060 Ti, 3070, and 3070 Ti are faster, but their 8GB of VRAM makes them less appealing for newer games. Unless one is unusually cheap, I’d save for a 3080 or consider a newer-generation card.

If you specifically want a 30-series card, the RTX 3080 is probably the best target. It’s a major jump over the RTX 2070 and is still excellent for 1080p or 1440p gaming. Try to find the 12GB version for 1440p; the 10GB model can still work well at 1080p but may be more limited in newer games. Used prices around $250–$325 can make the 3080 a good deal, though pricing depends heavily on your location.
