I was watching anime on my computer while scrolling through YouTube on my phone. When I locked my phone and focused on the show, I suddenly heard a conversation through my wireless earbuds. Turning off Bluetooth stopped it immediately. When I turned Bluetooth back on, the conversation returned, and I recognized the speaker as someone who lives roughly 170 meters away. I tried changing headphones, forgetting and repairing the device, but the problem continued until I restarted my phone. What could have caused this? Could someone hear or listen to me while my phone or earbuds are in their cases or switched off?

Before assuming it was a nearby person, check your phone's media and call history, browser tabs, notification history, and recently used apps. An autoplaying video, call, livestream, or accessibility feature could produce unexpected audio. Since Bluetooth being disabled stopped the sound and a reboot resolved it, a stuck Bluetooth or audio-routing bug is also possible.
If the earbuds are properly powered off or sealed in their charging case, they generally cannot transmit or record through Bluetooth. A phone with Bluetooth enabled can still connect to nearby paired devices, but normal Bluetooth pairing does not let a stranger simply listen to your microphone. To reduce the chance of accidental connections, remove unknown paired devices, update the phone and earbuds, use the manufacturer's reset-and-pair process, and avoid leaving the earbuds active when you are not using them.
A Bluetooth connection mix-up is a plausible explanation, especially if someone nearby was using the same or a similar earbud model. Some wireless devices can reconnect to the wrong phone, dongle, or headset after losing their normal connection. That could explain why you heard another person's call or conversation and why restarting your phone fixed it. It would not mean your phone was secretly tapping into them; it would more likely be an accidental audio connection.
Similar wireless gaming headsets can occasionally connect to the wrong receiver too. Usually the fix is to disconnect both devices, reconnect them one at a time, or reboot everything.
The fact that the conversation seemed unfamiliar does not prove it came from another person nearby. Audio can sometimes be routed from an app or device in a way that is not obvious, so checking system logs and app history would help if it happens again.
