Why do custom PSU cables cost more than the power supply itself?

I've been using colored cable extensions for a long time, but I'm considering custom cables to make my PC build look cleaner and reduce clutter. A basic custom set with a 24-pin motherboard cable, an 8-pin CPU cable, and bridged 8+8-pin PCIe cables costs around $140. That's more than the $90 I paid for my Montech Century 2 850W power supply. I understand that custom work involves extra labor, but why are the cables so expensive compared with the PSU?

Most of the price comes from manual labor and materials. A 24-pin cable alone has 24 separate wires, with terminals crimped onto both ends, then sleeved and arranged with combs. A complete set can involve well over a hundred individual crimps, and much of the work is done by hand.

The cables are also specific to the PSU’s modular pinout. A custom kit isn’t universally interchangeable, so the manufacturer has to support many different models instead of making one standard cable for everything. You’re paying for compatibility, customization, and quality control—not just the raw wire.

A power supply is produced in huge quantities using highly automated factory equipment, which keeps the per-unit cost low. Custom cables are made in much smaller batches, often with specific lengths, colors, comb spacing, and connector arrangements. That low-volume, made-to-order work costs more even though the finished product is simpler.

They’re ultimately a cosmetic premium product. The cables that came with the PSU will work perfectly fine, while custom ones let you choose the appearance and exact fit. If the price feels excessive, standard extensions or carefully managed stock cables are much cheaper alternatives.
