When I play games, even relatively lightweight ones, my GPU usage usually stays around 20–50% and temperatures are about 40–50°C. However, as soon as I open the Windows menu or switch toward the desktop, the frame rate suddenly jumps extremely high and GPU usage rises to 99%, along with the temperature. This happens across multiple games, not just one. My system has an RTX 4060 Ti and a Ryzen 7 5700X. What could be causing this, and is it something I should worry about?

Some games can behave strangely when they lose focus or when the frame rate becomes uncapped. The huge FPS number may simply mean the game is rendering as fast as possible in the background or during a menu transition, which can drive GPU usage to 99%. Try enabling a frame-rate limit or V-Sync, and check whether HDR, a very high desktop resolution, or multiple high-resolution displays are involved. Updating or testing a different stable graphics driver may also help.
The temperatures you described are not dangerous by themselves, but the behavior is worth checking. Run DirectX Diagnostic Tool, confirm your exact driver version, and look for a newer or more stable driver. Also check background programs such as browsers with many active tabs, overlays, recording software, and monitoring tools, since they can affect GPU usage when switching to the desktop.
A sudden FPS spike usually points to an uncapped frame rate rather than a failing graphics card. Set a maximum FPS in the game or in the NVIDIA control panel—around your monitor's refresh rate is a good starting point—and see whether GPU usage and temperature stop jumping when you open the Windows menu.
