Why Have 2TB NVMe SSD Prices Spiked, and Will They Come Down?

I was saving up for a 2TB NVMe SSD, and prices seemed fairly reasonable before 2026 began. Now, similar drives cost dramatically more than I expected. What caused the sudden increase, and is there a realistic chance prices will drop again?

The biggest factor is demand from AI data centers. They’re buying huge amounts of memory and storage, and a lot of future production capacity has already been reserved. It may take manufacturers time to expand output enough to balance the market.

That’s what surprised me. Since prices didn’t rise much during 2025, I assumed SSDs wouldn’t be affected this quickly.

It’s probably a combination of data-center demand, production constraints, material shortages, and manufacturers limiting supply to protect their margins. Tariffs and other trade costs can also make the final retail price higher.

The increase is big enough that some upgrades no longer seem worthwhile. For now, it may be cheaper to clean up existing files, add a smaller drive, or wait for supply to improve rather than paying several hundred dollars for a 1TB or 2TB upgrade.

I wouldn’t count on prices returning to their old levels soon. Storage prices sometimes fall when newer, faster, or higher-capacity products replace older models, but that can take a while. If you need one now, waiting for a sale or choosing a reputable used SSD and testing it thoroughly could help.
