Why Is My iPad 6 Battery Draining Even While It’s Plugged In?

My sixth-generation iPad has started losing battery extremely quickly, and the percentage continues to drop even when it is connected to a charger. The drain is even worse when it is unplugged. I've tried disabling background app refresh, notifications, motion effects, and other unnecessary activity. I've also restarted the iPad, powered it off completely, and tried charging it while it was shut down, but nothing helped. I'm using a 20W adapter, although I'm not sure how old or reliable the cable is. Could this be a worn-out battery, a damaged charging port or power-management component, an inadequate charger or cable, or a software problem? Would jailbreaking help identify battery-heavy processes, disable system services, throttle the processor, or otherwise reduce power use, or would it be useless if the battery itself is failing? What should I check next to determine whether the problem is software, the charger, the port, or the battery?

Before assuming the battery is dead, test the charging setup. Try a known-good, properly rated cable and adapter, and inspect the charging port for lint or debris. Clean it very carefully with a nonmetallic tool and don’t force anything into the port. Also try charging the iPad while it is powered off. If the percentage still falls with a reliable charger and cable, the battery or charging hardware is probably defective.

I’m using a 20W adapter, but I’m not sure about the cable, so I’ll try replacing that first and test it while the iPad is turned off.

This sounds much more like a failing or severely degraded battery than a background-process problem. If the iPad loses charge while powered off and connected to a charger, software is unlikely to be the main cause. A battery that is internally damaged may also charge extremely slowly or keep dropping under load. The practical fix is usually battery replacement, not jailbreaking. You can check Settings > Battery for unusual app usage, but if the drain continues while shut down, have the battery and charging circuit tested.

The battery settings page is worth checking first because it shows which apps used the most power recently. However, that information won’t explain continued drain while the device is shut down. That symptom points away from ordinary apps and toward the battery, cable, port, or charging circuitry.

Jailbreaking probably won’t solve this. It can provide more control over software and may help investigate unusual background activity, but it cannot restore a worn-out battery or repair the charging circuitry. It can also introduce instability and make troubleshooting harder. A factory reset could rule out a software issue, but only consider that after backing up your data. If the iPad still drains while powered off or plugged into a known-good charger, get the battery and port professionally diagnosed.
