After some recent Windows updates, my computer has started using nearly all of its memory even when I have no applications open. Task Manager shows processes such as Windows Antimalware Service Executable, Search, and sometimes Widgets using memory. I do not have much RAM installed, but this was never a problem during the previous five years. The usage is usually around 65–70% or higher while idle. Is this normal Windows behavior, or could something be wrong?

High memory usage by itself does not necessarily mean there is a problem. Windows uses available RAM for background services, caching, Search indexing, Defender, and Widgets, and it should release memory when another program needs it. The important questions are whether the computer is actually slowing down, freezing, or using a lot of the page file, and how much total RAM is installed.
Check the Memory column in Task Manager and sort it from highest to lowest. Windows Antimalware Service Executable can temporarily use more memory during a scan, while Search and Widgets may run in the background after an update. Give the system some time, then restart it and see whether usage returns to normal. Also run a full Windows Security scan if the behavior continues.
If the machine becomes sluggish or memory stays nearly full, review Startup apps and disable anything unnecessary. You can also turn off Widgets and reduce background applications in Windows settings. If the computer has only a small amount of RAM, such as 4 GB, modern Windows services can consume a noticeable percentage even when no visible programs are open.
I am not noticing major symptoms yet; I was mainly concerned because Task Manager shows more than 65–70% memory usage with no applications open.
