I bought a new 16GB Corsair DDR4 module to use with two existing 8GB XPG DDR4 sticks. I expected them to work together because they have the same DDR generation and speed, but the computer becomes unstable. Sometimes it boots into Windows and reports 32GB of memory, but opening applications causes crashes; other times it will not boot properly. I disabled XMP, and I also tried using only the 16GB stick with one 8GB stick, but that combination did not work either. Is there a reliable way to make these modules work together, or is mixed-capacity and mixed-brand memory the problem?

Matching the advertised speed is not enough. The modules also need compatible voltage, timings, rank layout, and support from the motherboard’s memory controller. A matched 2-stick or 4-stick kit is much more likely to work than three unrelated modules. If possible, use the 16GB stick alone or replace the setup with a properly matched kit.
Start with the simplest troubleshooting order: reset the BIOS to default settings, leave XMP disabled, install only the new 16GB stick in the board’s recommended slot, and run a memory test. Then test the old sticks individually. If each stick works alone but the combination fails, the mixed configuration is the likely cause rather than Windows.
Three sticks is usually a poor configuration for dual-channel DDR4. The system may detect all 32GB, but mixing capacities, brands, timings, and memory chips can still cause instability. Check the motherboard manual for the recommended slot order, and test each stick by itself first. Also verify that the new module is compatible with your motherboard and that it is not defective.
Windows does show 32GB, but applications crash shortly afterward. I’ll test the modules individually and check the slot layout in the motherboard manual.
The motherboard manual may also specify which slots to use. Two sticks generally belong in the recommended paired slots, while there may be no officially supported location for a third stick.
