Wi-Fi Became Unstable After I Edited the Windows Hosts File

I was troubleshooting a modded Minecraft server for voice-acting work and accidentally removed something from my Windows hosts file. A friend said I had deleted my IP address, so I restored the file to its default contents. Since then, my Wi-Fi connection has been unstable.

I have already updated my drivers, restarted the computer several times, and disconnected and reconnected to the network. What should I check next, and could the hosts file actually be responsible? I can provide system specifications if needed.

Compare your file with the standard Windows hosts file, but it usually only needs the localhost entries, such as 127.0.0.1 pointing to localhost. Windows can also recreate an empty hosts file. I would focus on the network settings rather than trying to restore a specific IP address.

The hosts file normally does not control your computer’s actual network IP address, so editing it is unlikely to make Wi-Fi unstable. The important part is figuring out what “unstable” means: does the connection disconnect, show no internet access, have high latency, or fail only in certain programs? That symptom will point to a much more useful diagnosis.

Open the network adapter settings and make sure both IP address and DNS are set to be obtained automatically. You can also run the built-in network troubleshooter, restart the router, and test another device on the same Wi-Fi. If other devices work normally, the issue is probably with this computer or its wireless adapter rather than the hosts file.
