Will an Encrypted Mac Backup Fully Transfer My iPhone 14 Pro to a New iPhone 17 Pro?

I'm upgrading from an iPhone 14 Pro to an iPhone 17 Pro, but my trade-in requires me to hand over the old phone as soon as the new one is delivered. That means I won't have time to use a direct device-to-device transfer, and I don't have another iPhone available. I do have a MacBook and an iPad.

My plan is to create a manually encrypted backup of the current iPhone on my MacBook immediately before the new phone arrives, then restore that backup onto the iPhone 17 Pro. I'm hoping to bring over all my apps, photos, files, settings, and other data as completely as possible.

I'm especially worried about WhatsApp because verification SMS messages currently aren't reaching my phone number. Will the Mac backup preserve my WhatsApp chats, contacts, documents, and voice notes, or do I need to use WhatsApp's own chat backup as well? Will WhatsApp remain signed in after the restore, or will the new phone require me to verify my number again? If I use WhatsApp's end-to-end encrypted backup, I'll make sure I have the password, passkey, or 64-digit recovery key.

Finally, is restoring an encrypted backup from an older iPhone model generally reliable, or is there a meaningful risk of corruption or data loss when moving to a brand-new model?

Treat WhatsApp separately from the general iPhone backup. Before handing over the old phone, open WhatsApp’s chat backup settings and run a fresh backup, making sure videos are included if you need them. If end-to-end encrypted backups are enabled, verify that you know the password, passkey, or 64-digit key because you’ll need it to restore the WhatsApp data.

That extra WhatsApp backup is important because its data isn’t guaranteed to come across through the Mac backup in the same way as normal iPhone data.

A successfully completed encrypted backup and a restore to a newer iPhone are usually reliable, but no backup method guarantees a perfect copy or zero risk. Let the backup finish completely, confirm that the Mac recognizes it as a recent backup, and keep any separate WhatsApp backup credentials available before erasing or trading in the old phone.

An encrypted Mac backup should restore the new iPhone to a state that’s very close to the old one, and a computer backup can sometimes carry over more than a direct phone-to-phone transfer. However, it isn’t a perfect bit-for-bit clone, so some apps may still require you to sign in again and a few settings or app-specific items may need attention.
