Will an RTX 5070 Look Better Than a Base PS5 at 1440p Ultra?

I'm new to PC gaming and currently have a base PS5. I'm considering building or buying my first gaming PC with an RTX 5070 and would use it with a 1440p monitor. If I played games at 1440p on ultra settings, would the image quality look noticeably better than it does on the PS5? I'm mainly interested in getting the best possible graphics, not just higher frame rates. Are there any other PC components I should pay attention to so the GPU isn't held back?

For a 1440p monitor, an RTX 5070 is more than capable of delivering a higher-quality image than the base PS5. Just keep in mind that “ultra” settings are not always visually better than “high,” and some games may benefit from using DLSS or adjusting a few demanding options. A well-balanced prebuilt or custom PC matters more than choosing the GPU in isolation.

The GPU is only part of the system, so pair it with a reasonably modern CPU, at least 32 GB of RAM if your budget allows, and a fast SSD. A weak processor or insufficient memory could cause stuttering and prevent the 5070 from performing properly. At 1440p ultra, though, the 5070 should be far ahead of the base PS5 in both image quality and performance.

That helps. I was mainly asking about visual quality rather than frame rates, so it sounds like the 5070 is still the better choice.

Yes—the RTX 5070 should produce noticeably better graphics than a base PS5 at 1440p. You’ll generally get higher settings, sharper image quality, better lighting effects, and access to features such as ray tracing, DLSS, and frame generation. The difference will vary by game, since consoles are highly optimized, but this is still a substantial upgrade in rendering capability.
