Will future games make 8 CPU cores important for gaming, or is a 6-core X3D chip enough?

Are there any credible indications that games launching over the next year or two will require more CPU cores, especially if the next console generation gives developers more cores to work with? I'm deciding between a 6-core 7500X3D and an 8-core 7800X3D, with the 7800X3D costing about 30% more and potentially requiring a more expensive cooler. How valuable are the extra two cores for gaming and occasional local LLM use? Would it make more sense to buy the 7500X3D now and move to an 8-core processor later if games start benefiting from it?

For gaming, the 6-core X3D chip is probably the better value today. Consoles have had eight physical cores for years, but games that clearly benefit from more than six cores are still relatively uncommon. Efficiently spreading a game’s main workloads across many threads is difficult, and most titles tend to scale more through higher CPU performance than simply adding cores.

Buying the 7500X3D now and upgrading later is a reasonable plan. Put the savings toward the GPU, since that usually matters more for gaming, and revisit the CPU when a clear need appears. An eventual 8-core upgrade on the same platform could give you more performance without paying today for cores you may not use.

There is some reason to expect core usage to increase eventually. Console CPUs may offer more threads, and games such as Helldivers 2 already keep many threads busy. However, that does not mean an 8-core desktop CPU will suddenly become a minimum requirement when the next consoles arrive. Developers usually support a wide range of PC hardware, and the practical difference is more likely to show up as smoother frame times or better performance in CPU-heavy games rather than games refusing to run.

Console core counts can be misleading because some threads are reserved for the operating system. The usable game-thread budget matters more than the headline number, and PC CPUs also have different performance per core and thread.

If you want the strongest long-term option and the price difference is comfortable, eight cores provide extra headroom for background tasks, streaming, simulation-heavy games, and future titles. But purely for gaming right now, the premium may not pay off, particularly if the 6-core model gives you similar gaming performance because of its cache.

For occasional local LLM use, extra CPU cores can help with loading models and CPU-based inference, but memory capacity, memory bandwidth, and especially a capable GPU are often more important. If the LLM workload is only light and gaming is the priority, I would not choose the 7800X3D solely for that use.
