Will the Ryzen 7 7700X hurt 1% lows compared with the 7800X3D?

I'm deciding between a Ryzen 7 7700X and a Ryzen 7 7800X3D. If I choose the 7700X and put the roughly $100 difference toward storage, should I expect noticeably worse 1% lows in CPU-heavy games such as strategy titles or games with lots of units and crowds? I'm also considering a 500GB hard drive for videos and other media, plus a 1TB SSD for games. Would that be cheaper or more practical than buying two SSDs?

The difference depends heavily on the specific game, graphics card, resolution, and settings. The 7800X3D generally delivers higher average FPS and can improve 1% lows in games that benefit from its extra cache, but the 7700X can perform similarly in some CPU-heavy titles. If gaming performance is the priority and the extra $100 fits your budget, the 7800X3D is the safer choice.

A mixed storage setup can save money. An SSD is ideal for the operating system and games, while a hard drive works well for videos, pictures, and other files where loading speed is less important. A single 2TB drive can also cost less than buying two separate 1TB drives, so compare current prices before deciding.

If your games are mostly limited by multiple CPU cores, the 7700X may be close to the 7800X3D. However, many games benefit more from cache and latency than from having additional cores, so there isn’t a universal answer. Check benchmarks for the games you actually play, especially if you’re targeting high refresh rates.

A hard drive is perfectly fine for media and rarely used games, though it will be slower and may make some noise when it spins up. If you want a quieter system and faster loading, using SSD storage for everything is nicer, but the practical gaming impact mostly applies to load times rather than in-game FPS.
