Windows 11 files and app settings disappeared after shutdown—could I be using a temporary profile?

After shutting down my Windows 11 PC yesterday, I found that many personal files were missing the next day. The Downloads folder still has its contents, but Pictures is empty, several apps such as Steam and Discord are asking me to sign in again, and at least one game appears to have lost its save data. I normally shut the computer down using the physical power button rather than the Start menu. What could cause this, and what should I do to recover the files and prevent it from happening again?

Using the physical power button for a normal shutdown isn’t recommended, especially if it cuts power before Windows finishes writing data. It can corrupt files or cause profile problems, although it doesn’t necessarily explain every missing file by itself. Use Start > Power > Shut down from now on, and run a disk-health check if this happens again.

So an improper shutdown could have caused corruption, but it doesn’t automatically mean everything is permanently gone?

Check whether Windows signed you into a temporary user profile. Open C:Users and look for your normal account folder; your files may still be there even though the current desktop looks empty. Don’t copy or delete anything until you confirm which profile you’re using. Restarting and signing in normally can sometimes restore the original profile, but if it keeps happening, check the Event Viewer and consider repairing the account or contacting a technician.

That would explain why my apps are acting like they were freshly installed. I’ll compare the folders under C:Users before changing anything.

Avoid installing recovery software, running cleanup tools, or repeatedly writing new data to the drive until you know what happened. First copy any important files you can still access to another drive. If the files were actually deleted rather than hidden by a temporary profile or sync issue, stop using that drive and use a reputable recovery service or recovery tool from a separate drive. System Restore usually affects system settings and installed programs, not personal files, so it may not bring deleted documents or saves back.

Check whether OneDrive is syncing Desktop, Documents, or Pictures, and look at the OneDrive recycle bin and Windows Recycle Bin. Also verify whether the computer has more than one storage drive and whether the affected folders are pointing to the correct location. Steam saves may be recoverable through Steam Cloud if it was enabled, or from the game’s local save folder.
