Windows 11 Pro N periodically shows a security notification saying Microsoft Defender isn't turned on and recommends enabling it. However, opening the security settings immediately shows that Defender is already enabled and working normally. The warning happens most often the first time the computer is started each day, though it also appears occasionally at random. Could this be related to Windows Update briefly restarting or updating Defender? The PC uses supported hardware.

It has reportedly been happening for at least a month, and the general consensus is that the notification is incorrect rather than a sign that Defender is actually disabled. It will hopefully be fixed in a future Windows update.
This appears to be a current Windows bug. If Defender is shown as enabled in Windows Security, you can dismiss the notification and continue using the PC normally. A restart may also clear the warning temporarily.
I’ve seen the same thing a couple of times. Defender was enabled whenever I checked, so dismissing the alert worked fine.
