My Acer laptop is running Windows 11 and is less than a month old. My mom and I were looking through files on some old USB drives when the laptop suddenly became unresponsive. The mouse pointer has been showing a loading icon for a long time, the taskbar disappeared, and clicking apps or pressing keys does not seem to do anything. I also cannot shut it down normally. I did remove the USB while files were still open or loading, so I'm worried that caused the problem. Pressing the Windows key briefly makes the screen go black, but nothing else happens. This is my first laptop, and I'm concerned that it may be permanently damaged because I can't afford to replace it.

This sounds more like a temporary Windows freeze or software corruption than a dead laptop. If restarting does not fix it, the next steps would be checking Windows recovery options, running a malware scan, and possibly reinstalling Windows. A clean reinstall can remove software problems, but it erases the drive, so do not choose that option until important files have been backed up or recovered.
Removing a USB while it is being used usually should not permanently damage the laptop, although it can cause file or system corruption. Since the computer is completely frozen, hold the power button down for about 10 seconds until it shuts off, wait a few seconds, and then turn it back on. Avoid reconnecting the old USB drives until the laptop is working normally, since older drives could contain damaged files or malware. If the laptop has important photos or documents, consider having a repair shop check it before reinstalling Windows.
A forced shutdown is reasonable here because the normal shutdown controls are unavailable. Hold the power button until the screen goes completely dark, then start it again. Windows may run a repair check during startup. If it boots normally, safely eject USB drives in the future before unplugging them. If the freezing keeps happening, back up anything important and use Windows recovery or Acer support rather than assuming the hardware is permanently broken.
