Would a Ryzen 7 5800X3D Help Me Hold 240 FPS in Fortnite?

I have a roughly five-year-old prebuilt system that I bought during the GPU shortage. It currently has a Ryzen 7 5800X, an RTX 3070, and 32GB of DDR4-3200 CL22 memory. In Fortnite, I usually see around 190–230 FPS, including in Creative, and I'm wondering whether a Ryzen 7 5800X3D would make 240 FPS more stable, especially by improving the 1% lows. Would that upgrade be worthwhile, or should I save for a full AM5 platform upgrade instead? Fortnite is the only game I play where maintaining 240 FPS seems difficult, although I'm also curious whether Counter-Strike 2 might struggle at native resolution.

Before buying anything, try Fortnite’s Performance Mode with low settings and only keep view distance higher. A 5800X3D and a similar-tier GPU can reach well above 240 FPS in that mode, while DX11 or DX12 may produce lower numbers.

Check GPU usage while playing with an unlocked frame rate. If the GPU is near 100%, a faster CPU won’t add much average FPS; it may only reduce dips. If GPU usage is well below that, the 5800X3D could provide higher averages and better lows.

I wouldn’t rush into AM5 just for this. Moving platforms means replacing the CPU, motherboard, and memory, so it costs much more. If you really want to stay on AM4, the 5800X3D is the sensible upgrade, but 190–230 FPS is already quite playable unless you’re specifically trying to saturate a high-refresh monitor.

The 5800X3D can help if you’re CPU-limited. Its extra 3D V-Cache generally improves frame-time consistency and 1% lows, though the average FPS increase over a 5800X depends on your settings and whether the RTX 3070 is already the limiting part.
