Would an RX 9070 XT Be Overkill for My Older i7-10700KF Build?

I'm deciding between an RX 9060 XT and an RX 9070 XT for my current system. My parts are an Intel Core i7-10700KF, RTX 2060, 32GB of DDR4-3000 memory, an ASUS PRIME B460M-A R2.0 motherboard, a 480GB SSD, a 1TB hard drive, and a 650W power supply. The 9060 XT costs about $458, while the 9070 XT is around $816. I originally called the system AM4, but I now realize I meant that the parts are from an older generation. Would the 9070 XT be too powerful for this build, and would I need to replace the power supply?

The 9060 XT 16GB is the more balanced choice for your current system and leaves money for other improvements. The 9070 XT is not automatically overkill, particularly for high-resolution or visually demanding single-player games, but you may not reach its full potential in CPU-limited situations.

The performance difference will depend heavily on the games, resolution, and settings. At higher resolutions, the workload shifts more toward the GPU, so the older CPU matters less.

The 9070 XT should work and would be a huge upgrade over the RTX 2060. Your processor may limit peak frame rates in some CPU-heavy games, especially at lower resolutions, but that doesn’t make the graphics card unusable. If you expect to upgrade the processor and motherboard later, buying the stronger GPU now can make sense.

I’m planning to replace the processor and motherboard eventually, but I can’t afford a complete rebuild right now. For the moment, I mainly want better graphics performance.

The power supply is the bigger concern. Before installing either card, especially the 9070 XT, replace the 650W unit with a reputable, appropriately rated model. An 850W high-quality PSU would provide comfortable headroom for the 9070 XT; don’t judge suitability by wattage alone because the specific model and build quality matter.

I was already planning to replace it if I choose the 9070 XT. For the 9060 XT, I assumed the existing supply would be enough, but I’ll verify the exact model and connectors first.
