Advice for African DevOps Engineers Looking to Break into the Global Market

I'm a DevOps engineer with about 5 years of experience and have had the chance to work for some of the leading tech firms in my country. While I've grown tremendously, I'm eager for more significant challenges and opportunities on the global stage. However, I'm noticing that geography impacts my options heavily. Many appealing job opportunities seem out of reach, and I find that some companies don't even respond to my applications despite my qualifications.

I'm keen to advance my career without losing my current momentum. My experience includes cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, GCP), Kubernetes/containerization, and CI/CD pipelines in private cloud environments. I'm open to remote work and collaborating with international teams.

I would love some advice from those who have successfully transitioned to international remote roles: 1. What companies realistically hire remote DevOps engineers from Africa? 2. What skills or experiences helped you stand out on a global scale? 3. Are there particular platforms or strategies that worked better beyond traditional job applications? 4. What should I focus on in the next couple of years to reach a truly global level? Any insights or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, it's often the case that global companies open local offices or partner with local firms instead of hiring remotely. It's a common scenario in the industry.

Yeah, I faced similar challenges. Even in Europe, I struggled to find DevOps roles from my home country until I moved to London. The minute I relocated, I had multiple companies reaching out to me. I believe companies prefer hiring local developers for these roles, so location is a significant factor.

Honestly, DevOps and related roles tend to be tough for foreign workers. Companies often have concerns regarding trust and regulations, making them hesitant to hire internationally. Even for remote positions that could technically be done from anywhere, many are moving to local hires. You might want to consider relocating if possible for better opportunities.
