Hey everyone! I'm 21 years old and currently working as a T1/T2 help desk assistant in a bit of a weird setup at my company. I'm looking to shift gears into a role in systems administration or I.T. infrastructure management. I've been diving into learning PowerShell scripting and other similar skills. I'd love to hear your advice on which certifications and skills I should focus on to make this transition happen. Also, if you have any tips or experiences on climbing the career ladder, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!

Starting off in help desk can be a great launch pad for your career! Many people underestimate the value of the experience you gain there. It’s all about leveraging that role to get more exposure. When I made the leap, I started to ask for extra tasks during downtime—like helping with backups or log retention. Don’t stress about scripting immediately; focus on understanding the tasks you handle day-to-day. That knowledge will be super valuable!

Totally agree! Getting hands-on with basic tasks really helped me build a strong foundation. Plus, it shows initiative.

For certifications, you might want to look into CompTIA Network+ and then Microsoft Azure certifications. The latter is great if you enjoy cloud tech! Also, since you mentioned having some Cyber Security background, don’t forget to keep that in your plans—it pairs well with systems administration. Keep honing your PowerShell skills too; they'll come in handy.

I’ve got my CompTIA A+ and I'm working toward Azure certs as well. Just trying to find the right resources to learn more!
