Advice Needed for Building a PC for My Son

I'm looking to build a PC for my son and I'm a bit lost on how much CPU and GPU power we really need. I want to ensure that his build is high-end because I know that just 'good enough' performance can be frustrating. It's been around a decade since I last built or upgraded my system, so I'm surprised by the current prices. I'm starting to wonder if my original plan might be over the top for a kid.

The main focus is solid gaming performance but also decent capabilities for modeling and editing tasks. Right now, he doesn't play super graphics-intensive games, but once he has a PC, I know he'll want to run things like GTA 5 (and eventually 6). His primary interests lie in creation, so 3D modeling and video editing will likely be the most demanding tasks, but I still want to ensure he's able to game smoothly.

I'm a bit confused about the GPU options since it seems like the best card for gaming might not be ideal for workstation tasks, and vice versa.

For the CPU, I'm considering the Ryzen 7 9800X3D or possibly the Ryzen 9 9950X3D since there's a pretty big price difference between them. I'm looking for feedback on whether the upgrade in price will translate into a noticeable performance increase for what we'll be using it for.

As for the GPU, I really have no clue what to choose. I'd prefer to keep the budget under $700, but I'm willing to adjust if necessary. I've seen gaming benchmarks everywhere, but I'm unsure what aspects are most beneficial for 3D modeling and editing while still providing solid gaming performance.

The Ryzen 9800X3D should work fine, but I’d recommend going for at least 32GB of RAM since your son will be multitasking with modeling and editing. For the GPU, look at the 5060 Ti or perhaps the 5070 models – they'll give you a good balance between gaming and creative work. Definitely check out PCPartPicker for price comparisons and to ensure all components are compatible!

Thanks for the tip! I was considering 64GB for future-proofing, but now I'm not sure if that's overkill. PCPartPicker is definitely on my list for checking compatibility!

For the CPU, the Ryzen 9900X might be a better fit for your son's needs and also easier on the budget compared to the 9950X. When it comes to GPUs, don't forget that VRAM is crucial for video editing, especially with 3D modeling tasks. I recommend looking into AMD GPUs since they often provide better price-to-performance ratios for video work right now.

I appreciate the insights! I've been weighing the higher-end AMD options against NVIDIA. I've got a bit of a bias towards NVIDIA due to their past dominance, so it's nice to hear AMD is holding its own now.
