I'm looking to upgrade my current AM4 configuration, which I've had since 2020. Here's what I'm working with:
- AMD Ryzen 5 3600
- Gigabyte RX 5700 XT Gaming OC 8GB
- ASUS TUF Gaming B550M-Plus (Wi-Fi)
- Corsair TX650 PSU
- 32GB DDR4 RAM (4x8GB)
- 2TB NVMe SSD
My goal is to play the latest games at 1440p with high settings, preferably future-proofing for the next several years. While I'm considering the RX 9070 XT, I'd prefer to stick with AM4 for now, as DDR5 prices are high and I don't want to invest in a new motherboard. I'm open to upgrading my CPU, GPU, or PSU as needed.
Here are my key questions:
1. How can I avoid CPU bottlenecks? What CPU or CPU/GPU combination would you recommend?
2. Do I need to upgrade my PSU, and how can I determine the power requirements for my new build?
3. Is it worth holding out for AM5, or should I go with AM4 options now given the current market situation?
I'm based in Europe, so any insights on pricing or availability would be appreciated!

Upgrading to the 5800X3D along with the RX 9070 XT was my best decision. My system runs like a champ, and I even repurposed my older parts into a server. The AM4 platform is pretty versatile, and you'll be solid for years with a good CPU/GPU combo.
You might want to start by getting a new GPU and PSU. The RX 9070 XT would be a solid choice, but you’ll definitely need at least an 850W PSU for it. Also, AMD just announced the re-release of the 5800X3D, which is a great CPU upgrade that should pair nicely with your setup. Don't forget, you can still overclock that Ryzen 5 3600 a bit to squeeze some more performance out for 1440p gaming!
I recently paired a 5700X3D with a 9070XT and I’m in love with that setup. It handles 1440p gaming beautifully, whether open-world or FPS games. If you invest in this combo, you should be good for a few years!
If performance is a priority, the Ryzen 5800X3D holds up exceptionally well. I’d say that’ll last you until AM6 arrives. Just make sure you also upgrade your power supply to an 850W or better to support your new GPU.
If you're looking for a budget-friendly option, the Ryzen 5700X is great and usually affordable. Sure, the X3D versions are superior if you find them at a reasonable price, but regularly looking for something with at least 12GB of VRAM for the GPU can really help in gaming. Recent trends show RAM prices dropping too, so that's promising for an upgrade.

I thought a 750W PSU was the minimum for the 9070 XT. I’ve been running mine with an overclocked 5900X on a 650W Seasonic without issues. Guess I should look into upgrading my PSU too!
