I'm looking to upgrade my PC, and I need some advice on the best motherboard and CPU options. Here are my current specs:
- Intel Core i9-10940X (3.3GHz, 14 cores, 19.25MB Cache)
- ASUS ROG STRIX X299-E GAMING II motherboard
- 128GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3200MHz (8 x 16GB)
- Nvidia RTX 4070 Super
- CORSAIR 1000W RMx SERIES MODULAR 80 PLUS GOLD power supply
I don't game much, so I think the 4070 Super is sufficient for me. I mostly use my PC for work and software development as a hobby, often running multiple tabs and three monitors. I've noticed that certain processes take me much longer than a friend's system running the same software.
I'm considering if I should upgrade my CPU, and if I do, will I need a new motherboard too? Also, is my RAM still good enough, or should I look into something else? I'm open to spending up to £1,200 if it will significantly boost my performance. Any recommendations?

Definitely look into getting a Ryzen CPU; they're really good for productivity. For the RAM, DDR5 is the way to go these days, and with AMD, you might want to get a 2x64GB kit since it’ll run better with just two slots filled. If you're just using 128GB because you thought you might need it in the future, you might want to scale down your needs and save some cash.
First off, you will need a new motherboard if you're upgrading the CPU, especially if you're switching to a newer generation like the Ryzen 9 series. For productivity tasks, consider something like a Ryzen 9 9900X or the 9950X. Also, your RAM will need an upgrade since your current setup uses DDR4. DDR5 RAM will offer a noticeable performance boost, especially for multitasking and heavy workloads.
