Advice Needed for Upgrading RAM and CPU on an Old Custom PC

I've got a custom-built PC that's almost 10 years old, and it's starting to struggle with my workload. I'm looking to upgrade both the RAM and the CPU since it's getting a bit slow. I know a GPU upgrade would be nice too, but those prices are just crazy right now!

I'm hoping to hear suggestions on good options that are reasonably priced. I've seen components priced up to $8,000, which is way beyond what I'm willing to spend. I think a maximum budget of around $1,000 per component would be acceptable. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Upgrading from a PC that’s over 10 years old? Tough spot! For any CPU upgrade, you’re definitely looking at needing a new motherboard along with the RAM. I’m not totally clear on your budget for this upgrade, but considering your mention of $1,000 per component, keep in mind that might not stretch as far as you'd hope. We need to know more about what you're using the PC for as well as your budget for the entire upgrade and what country you’re in to give you better advice on pricing!

If you're willing to look around, you can find combos of a motherboard, CPU, and RAM within the $500-$1,000 range. I’d recommend going for DDR5 RAM since the price difference over DDR4 right now isn’t massively different and DDR5 will keep your system performing well for years. In terms of pricing, a Ryzen 5 5500 setup with 16GB DDR4 goes for about $400 where I am, and a Ryzen 5 7600 with DDR5 is around $600. Overall, just brace yourself for spending about $1,500 to $2,500 if you want a quality mid-level upgrade given the current market.

You're picking a tough time to upgrade! Prices for a CPU and RAM combo are often starting at around $500, and that’s just for 32GB of RAM. Given the age of your setup, a motherboard swap will also be necessary, so expect your total to hit close to $1,000. However, doing some shopping at places like Newegg, I've seen bundles with a solid Ryzen CPU and 16GB of RAM go for about that

– not a bad deal if you're looking for a significant boost!
