I'm looking to purchase some Dell servers for backup storage and hypervisors and need some advice. The two servers I'm considering will mainly serve as hardened storage for Veeam, so they only require 32GB of RAM (2x16GB). However, my Dell partner claims that Dell informed them that using just 2 RAM modules would drastically hurt performance and that I must fill all the DIMM slots, meaning I would have to buy an additional 12 16GB DIMMs that I don't need. This seems odd to me, so I want to know if they're right or if I'm being ripped off here.

It sounds like you need to find a new partner! They're not being honest with you. Just two modules will work fine for your needs, and it's likely they're just trying to sell you more RAM to boost their sales figures. Don't fall for it!
It's true that performance can drop with only two slots filled, but for backup purposes, the difference won't matter much. I suggest you check out other vendors that are more flexible with their configurations.
That was my thought too. They insist they need to check the configuration with Dell, which might not even be necessary.
RAM prices can be pretty inflated, so there's a chance they're trying to fleece you. It's definitely worth shopping around.
I encountered a similar issue with Dell. I was quoted way more through their partner than buying directly. At the end of the day, support is nice, but saving those costs could mean more in your pocket for upgrades down the line.
If you're only using the servers for backup, 32GB should be plenty. Don't let them pressure you into unnecessary purchases!
Totally agree! Sounds like they're trying to push extra inventory because of the quarter's end. Definitely reconsider your options.
