Am I Bottlenecked by My GPU, and What’s a Good Upgrade Under $1000?

I'm currently using a compact PC build with an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, an RTX 2070 Super, and 32GB of DDR4 RAM running at 1600MHz. I primarily play games and watch YouTube. Right now, I'm playing Borderlands 4 on low settings, but I've also been trying out Destiny 2, Street Fighter 6, and had a tough time with Final Fantasy XVI, which I uninstalled due to poor performance. I'm looking to know if my GPU is the limiting factor in my gaming experience and what GPU upgrade options I should consider if I want to stay under $1000. Oh, and I'm located in the USA. Also, I think my power supply is around 650W.

For the best bang for your buck, you could get a 9070 for about $550 or the 5070 for around $530. It's really important to upgrade that PSU too, at least to 750W, to keep things running smoothly!

I’m rocking a comparable setup with an i5 and a 2070 Super. I’ve felt no CPU bottlenecks but I’m looking to upgrade my GPU soon because the 2070 is definitely holding back my gameplay.

For under $1000, you might want to look at options like the 9070x for around $650 or the 5070ti for about $750. These give great performance for the price. Just make sure to consider a new PSU too, maybe a solid 850W or 1000W to avoid issues with power spikes during gaming.

I had a similar setup a while ago and upgraded to a 5070. The performance and quality improvements were huge, definitely recommend looking into it.

It sounds like your GPU is indeed the bottleneck, especially if lowering settings improves performance. For a solid upgrade, you could consider getting a GeForce 5080 for about $1000. It’ll significantly enhance your gaming experience! Just make sure your PSU can handle it because the 5080 might draw more power than your current 650W supply can provide.

I have an Alienware ultrawide - with high refresh rates - and upgrading definitely makes a huge difference!

Just a heads up, if you’re coming from a 2070, your PSU should probably be beefed up to handle the 5080. It might not be enough for the spikes.

Honestly, your GPU is holding you back across most games. Upgrading to a newer model in the GeForce 40XX or 50XX series or Radeon 90XX series will provide a noticeable boost.

Thanks for the insight! I appreciate it!

That RAM speed could be an issue too. 1600MHz is pretty slow, just something to think about!
