I just built my first gaming PC with a 7800X3D, RTX 4070 Super, B650 motherboard, and a 750W PSU. After successfully getting everything powered on and into the BIOS, I noticed that I only connected one of the 8-pin PCIe cables to the GPU. I quickly shut down, plugged in the second cable, and everything seemed fine afterwards. I installed Windows, the appropriate drivers, and played some games without any issues—temperatures and performance seemed normal according to reviews. However, I'm now feeling paranoid. I hear coil whine during menus and even experienced a short black screen when I tabbed out of a game. There have been no crashes or visual artifacts, and my benchmarks are fine. I'm wondering whether running the 4070 Super with just one 8-pin connector for a brief period might have damaged it, or if it just didn't draw enough power. Should I consider returning it, or am I just worrying too much?

You’re right to be cautious, but it's likely just paranoia. If the GPU powered on without issues and you didn’t experience any artifacts or crashes, it’s probably fine. Maybe consider capping the FPS in those menus to minimize the coil whine you’re hearing.
You're fine. Enjoy your PC! If it wasn't able to work or show power lights indicating an issue, you'd have known right away. You're not anywhere near needing an RMA.
I don't think supplying less power can harm your GPU. It's designed to adapt to power conditions. As for the occasional black screen, it’s pretty common when tabbing out of games, especially with intensive graphics. I wouldn't worry about it yet.
Honestly, you're probably just being a bit paranoid. Coil whine and a brief black screen when tabbing are normal and not indicators of a failing GPU. Just enjoy your new build!
You're definitely in the clear! Just listen to this: I had a similar experience with a brand new GPU where it seemed to have issues, but it turned out to be okay. Just keep an eye on it, and if it performs well in stress tests, it's all good!
Don't stress; running the GPU with just one PCIe cable for a short period isn't going to harm it. The coil whine you're hearing is pretty normal, especially if the game’s frame rate spikes excessively in menus. It's usually just the GPU doing its thing and shouldn't indicate a problem.
Totally agree with you. Coil whine isn't a sign of damage—just something that happens with various components. It's annoying but not harmful!

Exactly! Also, if it’s bothering you, undervolting could help reduce the whine.
