Am I Overthinking My Learning Journey in C++?

Hey folks! I've been diving into C++ for about a week and managed to complete three small projects. Recently, I stumbled across the term 'tutorial hell' and it's got me feeling a bit anxious about my learning process. I often follow tutorials, but I make an effort to code alongside them and really grasp what I'm doing rather than just copying. However, I'm struggling to find solid advice on how to learn effectively, especially with the goal of eventually developing my own games. Should I consider completely stopping tutorials, continue building small projects, start exploring a game engine, or really focus on nailing the fundamentals of C++ first? I'd love to hear from others who have navigated this path or escaped tutorial hell. Your tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

The best way to learn is to build projects that excite you! It’s all about having fun and taking your time to dive deep into complex topics when necessary. If you find something intriguing, explore it further without rushing. Happy coding!

Absolutely! I’m also focused on building projects; it’s the most enjoyable part!

Use tutorials as a launchpad! Follow along, get a grasp of the concepts, and then try to expand on what you've built. Break things, make changes, or add new features. That's where you really start learning! Real progress comes from doing something on your own after you’ve got the basics down.

Totally agree! It’s all about experimenting with what you learn. Don't just stick to tutorials.

Dude, it’s only been a week! Don’t sweat being in 'tutorial hell' just yet. You’re really just starting out. As long as you’re building projects, you’re making progress. Focus on mastering C++ fundamentals first—memory management, pointers, and classes are key. Game engines can come later once you’re more comfortable. Keep coding, breaking stuff, and figuring it out—that's where the real learning happens!

Thanks for this reassurance! I was worried I was doing it wrong.

I’ve been in the field for years and while I didn’t learn only from tutorials, I did pick up tools on my own. The golden rule is to get comfortable doing the work. Find a mentor or community to share your projects and thoughts with. Focus on the fundamentals instead of the latest trends, and remember that there’s no substitute for dedicated guidance from experts!
