Am I Realistic About My PC Build Plans?

Hey everyone! I'm reaching out for a little reality check as I start planning my first custom PC build. I've been wanting to make the leap from a laptop to a proper setup for gaming but financial constraints have held me back for a while. Just when I finally saved up some cash, it feels like prices for components have skyrocketed—especially for RAM and GPUs. I recently watched a video discussing this and felt like I could relate to the example given.

My goal is to build a mid-range PC that can run modern games like Fortnite and Valorant smoothly (I'm currently stuck with lower-end specs) and maybe even dive into VR when I get a headset. I'm also considering a 1440p 120Hz monitor, but I'm wondering if that's overkill and if I should just stick to 1080p for one and get a cheaper monitor for things like Discord.

I'm trying to balance my budget around $1200, which seems hard to achieve now with all the rising costs. I have some uncertainty about whether to build on an AM4 or AM5 platform, with AM5 being pricier but potentially more future-proof. Is my dream setup realistic, or am I in over my head? I'd appreciate any insights or advice! Thanks a bunch!

Your budget is tight considering RAM costs, but it's definitely doable. Just remember that there are communities out there that can help you with specific builds if you need something straightforward!

Honestly, if you're working with a tighter budget, I would suggest avoiding a 1440p monitor unless it's OLED. The cost for a capable GPU to keep up with the frame rates at that resolution can be pretty steep. Many people make it seem like there's a huge difference, but the reality is that the increase in pixel density doesn't always justify the drop in FPS—and it's more noticeable in games than you might think!

You could definitely get a solid AM4 build for about $900. For example, pairing a 4060 GPU with a 5700X CPU would give you great performance. Also, keep in mind that DDR5 RAM is super expensive right now, costing about four times more than DDR4, which makes AM4 a sensible choice right now!

Thanks for the tip! I noticed the price difference and that’s really stressing me out. I wish DDR4 was still cheaper!

The big issue with AM5 right now is RAM prices—16GB of DDR4 can be found for around $100, while 32GB of DDR5 can cost over $400! Since you're on a budget, AM4 might be the better choice. Also, going for a 1440p setup is feasible, especially if you explore used GPUs, just don't forget about the potential FPS drop when switching from 1080p!

That’s really helpful, thanks! I just don’t want to end up with something that doesn't meet my expectations, especially after using lower specs!
