Are 8-Pin to 12VHPWR Adapters Safe to Use?

I've heard some mixed opinions about using 8-pin to 12VHPWR adapters. A few years ago, adapters like 2x Molex to 6-pin or 8-pin were generally discouraged due to safety concerns. Given that the 12VHPWR connector has a reputation for melting—even when directly from the PSU—I'm wondering if these adapters are safe to use. I have a non-modular PSU with 2x 6+2 pin connectors. If these adapters aren't safe, should I invest in a new PSU instead? I'm asking because my new GPU doesn't require the new cable, but I want to be prepared in case I decide to upgrade to a RX 9070 XT or RTX 5070 in the future.

The adapters that come with GPUs are designed to be as safe as possible. The melting issue mostly affects the highest power models, like the RTX 5090. For your setup, you should be just fine using those adapters as long as they are the ones that came with the GPU.

I wouldn't be so sure. We've seen cases of RX 9070 XTs with 12VHPWR connectors burning up, and that's for a 300W card, so it seems this safety issue is still relevant.

They're about as safe as a native 12V cable, but the older PEG connections can handle more current without failing. The real trouble usually comes from a damaged connector or terminals, not the cable itself. Just keep an eye out for wear and tear!

Honestly, they can be pretty risky. I'd say they pose a significant fire hazard. It's a gamble you might not want to take.

Using those adapters can be just as safe as a native 12VHPWR cable. Unlike many makeshift adapters, the ones that come with GPUs are built with thicker cables and good quality insulation. When people warn against adapters, they're usually referring to those poorly made ones that don't meet safety standards.

Just a heads-up, the RX 9070 XT doesn't typically use the new 12VHPWR connector, and it’s way faster than the RTX 5070, plus it has more VRAM. Don't stress too much about the 12VHPWR—it's known for a higher failure rate, but most end-users are fine. However, it is concerning that NVIDIA is cutting safety measures in their newer GPUs. Just make sure you check the specs of the graphics card you want.

Yeah, I'm stuck budget-wise, too. I might end up with a cheaper option like the RTX 5060. I know not all 9070 XTs have that 12VHPWR but just mentioning the 5070 gets a lot of reactions.
