I'm building a new PC specifically for 3D work, including Blender, Unreal Engine, Houdini, and some local AI/ML projects. My budget is around €5000. Currently, my parts list is based on a gaming build priced at €5000 but I've swapped out some components for what's available in the EU. I'm not concerned about gaming performance since this machine is strictly for 3D tasks and simulations.
With that in mind, I'm wondering which components I can downgrade without sacrificing too much performance in my 3D workloads. Are there any parts that are too geared towards gaming—like certain CPUs, motherboards, or cooling systems—that I could downgrade to save money? Here's a link to my current parts list: [PCPartPicker Part List](https://nl.pcpartpicker.com/list/khJHh9)

Honestly, your current build leans too much towards gaming—it's not really suited for a proper workstation.
You might want to ditch that gaming CPU altogether and go for something more suited for workloads. The Intel Core Ultra series could have some great combo deals for you to save a bit.
For a workstation, it's usually better to prioritize reliability over saving money. I'd suggest aiming for at least 64GB of RAM to support your AI projects and other 3D applications. The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D might not be the best CPU for your needs, especially if you're looking for heavy workloads. If upgrade options aren’t essential, consider the Intel Core i9-2700K or the 9950X instead. Also, I’d recommend swapping out that flashy case for one with better airflow, like the Lancool 217, to keep your system running cool and quiet.
Good point! If the goal isn't ultra-quiet, maybe consider a cheaper CPU cooler like the Thermalright Phantom Spirit or Peerless Assassin without all the RGB nonsense. Those can save you some cash and work just as well!
Thanks for the tips! Given the outrageous RAM prices lately, do you think it's wiser to upgrade the RAM and downgrade the GPU instead?
Would you be willing to consider an RTX 4090 instead of the 5090? I created a build that fits well within your budget with a solid CPU, RAM, and essential components. Check this out: [PCPartPicker](https://nl.pcpartpicker.com/list/xvPHh9).
It’s tough since you’re set on the RTX 5090, but cutting costs on the PSU and opting for more value-oriented components might help. Maybe consider going with a 5080 graphics card and bumping up the RAM to 64GB instead. Check out this alternative list I made: [PCPartPicker](https://nl.pcpartpicker.com/list/ftzgw3).
Thanks for the input! Is it more crucial in this build to prioritize the RAM or the GPU?

I get that, but I pointed out upfront that my list was inspired by a gaming PC. The question is what to change to better fit the workstation model...
