I'm looking for some recommendations for a new computer for an elderly guy I'm caring for. He's been using his old ThinkPad from 2008 for over 15 years, but it's finally given up on him. I need something that resembles this ThinkPad, as the transition to a new system might be overwhelming for him. It's really important that I can set this new computer up to prevent him from downloading random stuff since he often gets confused about what's safe and what's not. Ideally, I'd like to have remote access for troubleshooting without him having to click around a lot. His budget is limited, so I'm hoping to find something affordable, preferably just a few hundred dollars. Any suggestions?

Since he's used to an older version of Windows, transitioning to ChromeOS or even a Mac might be easier than moving to Windows 10 or 11. I helped my father-in-law get an iPad, and he's found it way more user-friendly than dealing with a laptop.
A Chromebook could be your best option. They're affordable and pretty much foolproof for basic tasks like web browsing and watching videos. Plus, it's hard to mess them up, which is great for someone not too tech-savvy.
If you're set on Windows, look for a Windows 10 laptop from brands like Acer or HP. Just make sure it’s new or certified refurbished to avoid any headaches with used ones. A solid setup with remote access tools like TeamViewer could help you assist him directly.
Yeah, used laptops can be risky, especially for someone in his situation. A new one might be safer.
You might also consider getting him another used ThinkPad. You can find decent ones on eBay for a couple of hundred dollars. Just make sure to set it up with a non-admin account to avoid the installation issues.
For remote access, I’d recommend software like AnyDesk or TeamViewer. It lets you see exactly what he sees on his screen, making it easier to guide him through things. Just set everything up beforehand so he doesn’t have to mess with it.
Totally agree! They're much easier to use than a Windows PC.
