Best CPU Choices for Music Production and Creative Work

I'm building a PC primarily for music production with large orchestral projects that use heavy sample libraries and VSTs. I also plan to use Adobe Creative Cloud applications like Photoshop, Illustrator, and Lightroom, and while video editing isn't my immediate focus, I might need it later on. Additionally, I want to prepare for some AI workloads in the future. My budget for the CPU is strictly $300 USD. I'm considering two options: the AMD Ryzen 7 9700X with 8 cores and 16 threads, and the Intel Core Ultra 7 265K which offers 20 cores (8 P-cores and 12 E-cores) with speeds up to 5.5 GHz. Does anyone have insights on which is better for my needs? Also, when do CPUs typically see major price drops outside of Black Friday?

Definitely go for the 265K if you're strictly focusing on work-related tasks. Just keep in mind that it requires fast RAM and a Z890 motherboard to really get the most out of it. But overall, it seems to be the better fit.

If you’re unsure, check out PCPartPicker; they track prices and can show price history. In my experience, I found that prices can drop significantly after Black Friday, so waiting might not be a bad idea!

The Intel 265K looks like a solid choice for what you need, especially with productivity tasks. Plus, it has Quick Sync for smoother video editing when you get to that. It’s powerful and should handle your current and future needs well.

Honestly, if you're looking to do AI workloads down the line, the Intel might serve you better. Just a heads-up, though: some sectors are leaning away from AI for content creation, so consider how necessary that will be for you.

While both CPUs are good, I think you might be better off considering the R9 7900 or 7900X. It offers 12 cores and 24 threads, which is excellent for music production and other tasks. Plus, it’s known for its efficiency and performance, often around the same price.
