Best CPU Upgrade for 1440p Gaming with RTX 5070 and Ryzen 5 3600?

Hey everyone! I recently upgraded my five-year-old gaming SFFPC from a GTX 1650 Super to an RTX 5070, and now I'm looking to upgrade my CPU (still sticking with AM4) to avoid any bottlenecking while gaming at 1440p. I've considered a couple of options:

- The Ryzen 7 5700X3D or 5800X3D would really help, but they're priced around $320 used, which is a bit steep for me.
- I've spotted the Ryzen 7 5800XT for about $160 on Amazon and the Ryzen 7 5700X isn't much cheaper on Newegg.

Currently, I'm using a Noctua NH-L12S low-profile cooler, and while my R5 3600 can hit 87C during stress tests, it stays around 65C while gaming. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

The 5800XT could save you some cash, but honestly, the 5600X can handle most games just fine. Plus, it's better for power consumption at 65W TDP versus 105W for the 5800XT.

I get the concern about thermals, but I've seen good performance with the 5600X too, and it runs cooler. Just keep an eye on your CPU cooler!

If you're looking for a budget-friendly upgrade, the Ryzen 5 5600 would be a solid choice. It offers a nice performance boost compared to your 3600 without breaking the bank, and you'll get a few more years of decent gaming out of it.

Yeah, the 5600X is around $120 on Newegg right now, so it’s just $40 less than the 5700. If the difference isn't massive, I’d upgrade to the 5600X myself.

If you have a Microcenter nearby, they’ve got the 5700X for around $130! It's a good option that runs cooler than the 5800 series.

I actually just found out there’s one a few blocks away! Might just drop in and check it out.

What’s your budget looking like? If you go with AM5, you'll need a whole new setup, which can get pricey pretty fast. An AM4 upgrade is way cheaper in the short term.

I just spent $550 on my new GPU, so I’d rather stick with AM4 for now. Upgrading to AM5 would cost me around $500 more.

Have you checked out local listings for used CPUs? I got a 5600X for $50 and sold my 3600 the next day, which was a sweet deal!

Nice find! They’re still around $100 where I’m at. I saw a 5800X for $80, but it had bent pins, so that’s a no-go.
