Best CPU Upgrade for Game Development

I'm an indie game developer who built my PC on a budget back in 2022. I have a Ryzen 5 5500 and an AMD RX 580, which I'm looking to upgrade, especially since I have a 2K 144Hz monitor. I'm considering getting a 9070XT, which requires a new power supply since my current 500W just won't cut it. I might also need a new case and thought I could upgrade the processor while I'm at it. I'm mainly using Unreal Engine for game development and thinking about going for a Ryzen 7. Any suggestions on the best CPU for my setup, and is it worth upgrading? Thanks!

If you're sticking with DDR4 and have the Asus ROG Strix B550-F motherboard, you'll want something that maximizes your setup. A Ryzen 7 sounds good, but consider if you'll really utilize the extra power. For game dev, the Ryzen 5 5500 is decent for playtesting, but if you're looking to optimize for different hardware configurations, a Ryzen 9 or 5900X offers the threading you need for modern game engines like Unreal.

Totally agree, optimizing for lower-end systems is crucial. But I also share your interest in having a smooth gaming experience. If you're looking for higher fps, Ryzen 7 could be a sweet spot without going ultra-high end.

Honestly, the 5500 you have is still viable for basic development. It might be challenging for high-end games, but it’s all about balancing performance and budget, especially if you’re working on diverse hardware capabilities. But if you aim to push your projects further, stepping up to a Ryzen 7 can definitely be worth it.

For game development with Unreal Engine, a Ryzen 5900X would be a great choice. It’s multi-threaded and can handle heavy loads efficiently, which is beneficial for larger projects. You don’t necessarily need the X3D version to save some cash. Just make sure your cooling solution can keep up!
