I recently assembled parts for a new PC featuring a 9800x3d CPU and a 5080 GPU housed in a Fractal Torrent case. My focus is purely on optimizing performance and achieving low temperatures, without any regard for RGB aesthetics. I'm planning to keep this PC for the long haul and have a few questions:
1. Should I stick with the fans I selected or consider returning them?
2. Is it better to run 2 or 3 140mm fans at the bottom for cooling efficiency?
3. What is the best fan configuration to achieve the lowest possible temps?
Currently, I'm considering two 180mm fans at the front, either three or two 140mm fans at the bottom, and one 120mm fan for rear exhaust. The Torrent case is a lot bigger than I expected—are there any disadvantages to switching to the Torrent Compact model?
Here's my current build:
- CPU: 9800x3d
- GPU: 5080
- CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 G2
- Fan Controller: Noctua NA-FD1
- Intake Fans: 3x Phanteks T30 140mm
- Exhaust Fan: 1x Noctua NF-A12x25 120mm
- Additional Intake: 2x stock 180mm.
I appreciate any input, as I struggled to find clear answers to these questions! Thanks!

You really don't need a rear exhaust fan since the rear panel design doesn't restrict airflow much. Your current fans are well-made, and the cost benefits of switching them out for something new wouldn't be significant. Just make sure to keep their speeds lower, around 40-50%, to minimize noise.
Starting with the case question, I wouldn't stress too much about size. Some builders do prefer smaller cases for easy handling, but your full tower is great for airflow and future upgrades. Switching to the Torrent Compact could work without any issues; just keep in mind that you might have less space for cable management.
As for the fan configuration, most setups do fine with 2 front intakes and a rear exhaust. If you're looking for quieter operation, using larger fans that can move more air at lower speeds is definitely a solid strategy. I wouldn't worry too much about adding more fans unless you're experiencing high temps—more fans can help spread noise too.
The 2x180mm and 3x140mm fans you have are already excellent, so I'd recommend just keeping them and returning any extras. Those front fans can be run at lower speeds without sacrificing much performance due to their size. Regarding the case, the Torrent Compact works fine too, though be aware it has limited GPU length support, which might be a concern if you're using more substantial graphics cards.
Thanks for the insights! I’m still figuring out which case will be best for my 5080 graphics card.

That’s great advice! I really want a quiet setup, so keeping the fan speeds low makes sense.
