I upgraded my PC about ten years ago with an Intel i7 5930K and an Asus X99A motherboard, paired with a GTX 980Ti. While this setup has served me well, I'm planning to refresh it with just a GPU upgrade for now, since I don't have the time to overhaul the whole system. I'm looking for a graphics card that would be compatible without too much CPU bottlenecking, ideally from the last generation available. My primary use is at 1440p, and I'm open to ray tracing but it's not a must-have. Recommendations on what would work best with my older hardware would be appreciated. Thanks for the help!

I’d recommend checking out a used RTX 3070. It should give you a solid performance boost without breaking the bank or causing major bottlenecks with your CPU.
Your X99 supports PCIe Gen 3, which is decent bandwidth overall. Considering your CPU, you’re at 6 cores and 12 threads, which isn’t modern, but still usable. I’d check out GPUs that are around double the performance of your 980 Ti. Look into options like the Nvidia 3060 Ti, 4060, or AMD’s RX6000 series starting from 6700 and up. But just keep in mind, the newer cards may underperform due to your older CPU. If budget allows, something like the 6700XT or 4060 Ti could be a good goal.
For solid 1440p performance, consider at least the RTX 4060 Ti with 16GB of VRAM. It should do fine with your setup, as long as you don't mind a bit of bottlenecking due to the CPU.
Do you think that will be a huge issue with my 5930K? I’m worried it might hold back performance too much.

Thanks for the tips! I’ll aim for something that balances power and future-proofing.
