Best Laptop and OS for Programming in University?

I'm heading to university for a computer science degree and I need to choose a laptop. I already own a decent Windows PC, but I think a laptop will be more convenient for school and future work. Can anyone suggest specific laptop models? If you don't have a model in mind, what key specifications should I look for? I'm also curious about the differences in programming across Linux, Windows, and macOS, so if you recommend one, I'd love to know why you think it's the best option. My budget is around $1,000.

Honestly, it really depends on what kind of programming you want to do. Most people can’t go wrong with either Mac or Linux, since both are UNIX-based, which makes terminal work a breeze. I favor them over Windows for sure.

I'd suggest getting Windows and using WSL. That way, you can use both systems at once without hassle. If you prefer Linux, that's another solid choice. Just steer clear of macOS; it can be really frustrating for programming tasks. I found working with Mac users in uni to be tough—stuff just didn’t work right for them.

Honestly, any OS can work, especially since there are plenty of free online tools out there that let you code right in your browser!

I'd say go for Linux! You can really use any laptop for that. If you already have a Windows laptop, just install WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) and it gives you all you need for Linux functionality. Mac can also work, but keep in mind it’s more BSD Unix rather than Linux, which means some things can be a bit different.

macOS is my top pick! It comes pre-loaded with a lot of development tools. Plus, new tools usually get released there first, which can give you an edge.
