I'm looking for a lightweight Linux distribution that can help prevent my old laptop from shutting down while playing Balatro. Even Lubuntu doesn't seem to work well for me, as it still powers down unexpectedly. I'm on a budget, so I'd prefer something with lower resource usage. Additionally, I want to avoid having to sift through a ton of guides to make programs like Wine work. Would a distro with the i3 window manager be a better option for me?

Switching to a lighter distro probably won’t solve your problems if your laptop is overheating. If Openbox is too demanding, then i3 will likely struggle as well. Plus, if you aren’t keen on reading guides, configuring i3 might not be the best choice for you.
It sounds like your laptop's shutting down is more likely due to overheating or power issues than just the distro you're using. You might want to check if your charger is powerful enough and ensure it isn't overheating. Sometimes, it's not just about the OS—hardware issues can cause these shutdowns too.
Random shutdowns are usually caused by hardware issues or insufficient RAM, not just high CPU usage. While running a lighter distro might help reduce the load a bit, it won't completely stop the shutdowns if there are underlying hardware problems. You should definitely consider checking your hardware first.
