Best Linux Distributions for Low-End Convertible Laptops for Studying

I have an old HP Pavilion x360 convertible laptop with an Intel Pentium N5000 processor. It has inconsistent RAM information; it says it has 4 GB, but some sources online indicate 8 GB. I initially tried installing Ubuntu 25.10, but it's running really slow. I'm looking for recommendations on lightweight Linux distributions that are suitable for study tasks like note-taking and completing homework. Additionally, since my laptop has a touchscreen, I need suggestions for apps and a distro that can effectively support touch functionality. Any help would be appreciated!

Have you considered ChromeOS Flex? It has a touch-friendly interface and is generally lightweight. You can create a bootable USB with the Chromebook recovery utility. It's pretty smooth on hardware like yours.

If you want to stick with Ubuntu, you might want to try Lubuntu. It's designed specifically for lower-spec hardware and could perform better on your laptop. Definitely worth a look!

I’d suggest trying Alpine Linux with LXQT. It’s lightweight, supports touch screens well, and has a decent selection of apps that could meet your needs for studying.

Keep in mind that your laptop does have a touchscreen, so it’s important to choose a distro that supports it. Mint with XFCE could be a good option; I’ve had success with it on older machines. Just ensure that the touchscreen works well with the interface.

I've been using MX Linux with XFCE too, and it runs pretty well on older hardware. The touchscreen functioned seamlessly for me, so definitely give it a shot!

If you are limited to 4 GB RAM, check out options like Mint with XFCE, Xubuntu, or Lubuntu. Fedora and Debian also have lightweight flavors like XFCE or LXQT. I'd recommend visiting Distrosea to test different distributions and see what feels right for you!
