I'm planning to switch from Windows 11 to Linux as my main operating system and need recommendations for a daily OS that can handle university work, personal programming projects, and gaming. My experience is limited to SteamOS on my Steam Deck and Raspberry Pi OS. The hardware I'm working with includes an Intel i5-12th Gen CPU, 16GB of RAM, an NVIDIA RTX 4050 GPU, and a 512GB SSD for Windows alongside a 120GB NVMe drive where I plan to install Linux.
I've tested Pop!_OS and Bazzite in virtual machines; I found Pop!_OS to have an excellent workflow with its auto-tiling feature, which boosts my productivity. In contrast, while Bazzite is great for gaming, its immutable system feels restrictive for daily tasks.
My questions are:
1. Is Pop!_OS still the best option for someone with an NVIDIA 40-series card looking for a balanced OS?
2. Should I endure the learning curve of Bazzite for its gaming optimizations?
Additionally, I'm curious about trying other distros like Nobara, Fedora Workstation, and CachyOS. Which one would be stable enough for university work and offer good performance? Any hidden gems I should look into before making my decision?

I’m using Arch on my school laptop and it works like a charm! It’s easy to set up if you do some initial research. For gaming, distros like Nobara and Cachy are designed for performance. But honestly, you can customize any regular distro to your needs. The key difference lies in the package managers; choose one that fits your comfort level—Pacman with Arch/AUR for flexibility or Ubuntu for stability and ease. Just figure out how frequently you want your packages updated.
Right now Pop!_OS is undergoing some transitions with its desktop environment, making it a bit unstable. Linux Mint could be more reliable for your needs. It offers a user-friendly experience, especially for managing NVIDIA drivers after the base system installation. I'd recommend trying it out from a Live USB first to see if you like it!
Sounds like a plan! I’ll test Mint in a VM and see how I like it.
Congrats on exploring your Linux options! Once you have your NVIDIA drivers installed, most distros will perform similarly since they share the same kernel and drivers. If Pop!_OS appeals to you, I'd say go with it! Ubuntu or Linux Mint are also great choices if you want something user-friendly. They add more convenience for beginners and have wider support on forums, making troubleshooting a breeze. Check out protondb.com for game compatibility information. Welcome to the world of Linux!
I might give Mint a shot too, but Pop!_OS still seems like my first pick.
If you’re migrating, check out our migration wiki page. Avoid third-party repos and verify your ISOs after download for security!
I'd steer away from Bazzite due to its immutability. Pop!_OS doesn’t have unique benefits for NVIDIA; it does well due to their QA processes. Cachy is a solid choice with easier installation via AUR, which can save you headaches in the long run. They all perform similarly, so focus on what UI and defaults work best for you. If you loved Pop's tiling feature, remember you can install that on other distros too!
I have mostly worked with Ubuntu in server environments, so the apt system is what I'm familiar with.

Sticking with an Ubuntu-based distro sounds like the best bet for me. Thanks!
